Tuesday in which I speak Lavoisier

This morning was confused. Chris had an early devotional with us, then everyone scattered to do their morning chores. We didn't really get gathered until 9:15

Devotional take 2-I like having already read the Book of Mormon with dad. We read scriptures from the topical guide under Potter, as the children painted their pottery, or paper, or themselves...we talked about ourselves as clay and how we would feel if our creations suddenly spoke and said we didn't make them.

Learning time: They continued to paint, while I told them about what I have read in Lavoisier. I explained states of matter again and atmospheric pressure. We talked about heat, bonds and atmospheric pressure and how they compete to spearate or join particles. We talked about naming Oxygen and Nitrogen. I showed the pictures his wife had drawn adn explained a little about his life...They were mostly painting, but did pause at some parts...especially if they had heard about it before while I was reading it.

Friday-science and CLAY!

Morning routine went out the window in a mad attempt to organize for play group. We cleaned like the wind, or rather, I cleaned like the wind while simultaneously nagging like a magpie to encourage my children to help. It didn't look messy enough for them to feel the urgency...

We did have most of a devotional, during which time the little people got out a bunch of blankets and pillows in the front room, just to make it cozy for all our visitors!

Play day

The Leavitts stayed to have science...we only have one other family in our group and they haven't come since she had her baby the last of August...I had invited an electricity expert to show us what kind of things conduct (our 12 year old neighbor Taylor Coffelt). He spent over 30 minutes talking about conductivity. He showed us how a penny and a nail can make a potato a great conductor. He had me dissect a pencil to get the lead, which is a resistor. He showed us how we conduct and cucumbers (or mostly the water in them) conduct. It was fabulous and much better than I could have done.

We also talked about density of liquids, guessed which liquids were most dense (we had vegetable oil, baby oil, corn syrup, water, isopropyl and vinegar. We colored some of the liquids so we could see the layering better. I took about 15 minutes, the children did enjoy stirring in food coloring and watching the layers. We made it twice, the second time remembering what was heaviest, so it would layer nicely.

CLAY-We cleaned up and headed off for the HUGE home school group to dig clay. It was VERY fun and extremely easy. The children all worked very well (excepting Ben and the little girls). We dug the clay, sifted the clay a few times, kneaded the clay, then finally made something. They had some toy pottery wheels and a few "real" pottery wheels. Each child was able to make something.http://s9.photobucket.com/albums/a58/Hammy_1989/?action=view¤t=c7604501.pbw

Thrusday choir day

Morning routine: AGGHH more whine-I knew this was to be a busy day and I didn't want to do it with whining children. I kept dishing out chores that needed to be done before we left for choir. The children were motivated, but it did take long enough that we didn't have a devotional.

Choir-which everyone loved...while we weren't at choir, we played at the Claunches..

Tuesday-a VERY grumpy day

Morning routine-consisted of large amounts of whining, no spoon was right, no bowl was right, oatmeal was definitely not right...

Devotional: I was feeling rather grumpy as well. We started promptly at 9 and started to sing. We sang "Count Your many blessings", then we sang every hymn we knew in the topic gratitude. We made a list of our blessings, I said we could stop when we reached more than 100. This whole process took a long time, and basically took over any other learning that morning, but I felt it was MUCH needed (if not just for me!).

Monday

AGHH...busy week, but I am going to try to recap...

I don't remember the morning or devotional...I do know they existed, and the morning was little crazy.

In between devotional and learning time, something happened, maybe a diaper change. When I refocused, everyone was busy. Kalani was copying scriptures, Natalie had decided to continue with more viola theory, and Raymond was working in his math workbook. I could not think of a single reason why I shoudl interupt such a thing! So I didn't. I looked through my books by myself, and slowly, one by one the children came up to see why I had they big art book down. I showed them some examples of very early art, mostly pottery. We talked about what early civilization was like and how much time was spent on finding food, or farming, maintaining a dwelling and making clothing.

a plot day

Morning routine: AHH the difference a day makes. The morning routine went off without a hitch. Everyone was MUCH happier today, laundry was started, music time done, chores done...MUCH BETTER! Of course in the midst of the normal morning chaos I discovered that we had a library video due yesterday! I rushed it off to the library and thus we started 5 minutes late!

Devoltional: We read 3 Nephi 13:24-end. It was a great section with the "consider the lillies" and a reminder to choose the Lord first. We discussed personal scripture reading...which the children haven't really done much of lately. We also discussed self esteem and how it comes from knowing we are children of God and acting like we know!

learning time: We read about 40 pages in Journey to the Centre of the Earth. It was rather plot heavy as we near the end, but we did discus clouds (in relation to the cumuli present as the storm on the sea approaches) Raymond found a weather book and we all enjoyed some beautiful cloud pictures.

**I need to involve Kalani more...

September 11

Yesterday my parents came to visit...and I was babysitting an extra 5 children...

Today-it is simply September 11-thoughts to those so tragically effected that day...

Morning routine: Wow have we all been bitten by an extreme case of the grouchies. We were whinny, grumpy, and in some cases out and out disobedient! We finally got to learning time...at 9 exactly no less, but wow the grouchiness continued.

Morning devotional:with extra grouchiness and disobedience abounding we left our scriptures-for those of us that would even look for them-and went to clean the van. It needed to be done nd we needed to shines away all of our whinies. After the van we read some scriptures about Christ as Creator. No one was in much mood to discuss, but I spoke a little about Christ's power and how prayer is more meaningful when we realize how well he knows His creations (US!) and how powerful He is.

Learning time: we read from Journey to the center of the earth...it was a plot heavy section with the first sightings of plesiasaurous and ichthyosaur. Not much discussion, but a little math with all the measurements and lengths of things. Ofcourse they continue to be given in leagues...perhaps this book will cement everyones 3 times tables! We also discussed centegrade and fareheit...more math

frustrations: whining? whining? disobedience and grouchiness...it sure is infectious....the cleaning seemed to help-hopefully the rest of the day will be better...

play and excavate

Morning routine: We have a winner!!! The weeks best morning routine. I started and rotated the laundry, everyone finished chores and was dressed. Music time was done and we started learning time before 9:15 (okay so I wasn't watching the clock...

Learning time: We had devotional and read Dctrine and Covenants 76 about Jospeh Smith seeing Christ, and Christ as our creator. We read 15 pages in journey to the center of the earth...not much to discuss, but we are finally on the raft!

We went to paly group..on time...and had a fun time. After play group we had lunch together. We discussed the days of creation and the children remembered what was created each day! April Leavitt talked about dinosaurs and fossils, than we excavated our dinosaurs. What could be more fun than using hammers and chissels on plaster to find dinosaurs? The children had a great time. it is a LOT of work to chip away at plaster!

frustrations:I need to do better with the devotional time, so that they look forward to that as much as learning time. We need to work on the lunch to coop transition...

domion over the land

Morning routine: We did get some laundry started and children all ready..we were not staying home so that took a little phone calling, and children motivating. We got out the door at 9:30 with all but music time done.

Learning time: I had decided it would be wonderful to take advantage of the season, enjoy the creations and learn to be stewards...okay a little hard work is what I was after, with fruit as the reward.

We picked apples and pears...cleaned a very little at the combs. The tree was very hard to climb so the childen wer not interested in picking apples. Next we went to bother Pierce's. We helped him clean up peaches from teh ground that had fallen in the storm. We also picked some peaches that would be lost otherwise, and planned to come back next week. It was a lot of work and it felt good to make a difference. Brothe rPierce has a wonderful garden.

Frustrations: The children did not work as much as I would have liked. i really need to work on that. I hope if we do this regularly we will improve..

Creation Pictures

Morning routine: Very rough this morning! That figures since we had a great day yesterday. It also could relate to the lovely evening yesterday that involved apple juice and Parmesan cheese and two toddlers!! I decided to run pick up milk this morning. I started and rotated the laundry. I started to bread and put it to rising. I didn't do the morning dishes, and the children were scampering around dressing at 9-with not a drop of music time. **morning routine on paper and me finished by 8:30 so I can do phonics with Lydia or read with her.

Learning time: I started at 9:20 again. Some of the children were still running around getting ready, but I wanted to start myself to get a little ahead.

Devotional: We were coloring creation pictures. We drew block numbers 1-6 and inside the number colored what was created that day. We read the creation from Moses 2 today...in pieces as we were ready to color them. I had read it myself this morning to have in mind where to stop and a few other ideas. Although the children did copy mine to some extent, some of them are better and more thorough colorers than I. Lydia did beautiful drawings, but not always related to what was created that day. Raymond wasn't interested at all, so he continued making origami rockets and planes. He did listen to reading. We ended up coloring for over 1 hour-with Kalani talking the longest and Lydia continuing to color on her own theme.**I want to read scriptures about Christ as the creator and choose one to memorize.

Science...as it related to the book so well we did a simple experiment with states of matter. We had hot water in a bottle with ice on the lid. A cloud formed and there was condensation. Raymond really enjoyed explaining and watching this...I knew he had read about he experiment before. It related wonderfully to the huge cavern in Journey to the center of the earth...which is were we were reading today. We talked about matter moving from one state to another.

Reading: We continued to read from Journey to the Center of the Earth. We read about 20 pages and read over an hour. We didn't discuss much today as it was very plot heavy. We are looking a few of the places referenced on the Internet. The children were glad to get the story moving somewhere. It was past 11:30 when we finally stopped.**finish looking on the Internet at the caverns referred to in the book.

frustrations: Will Ben EVER be potty trained? He had a big accident that was NOT at all fun and spent the rest of learning time in the bath cleaning up. The children were patient with the pause-as they had other things they were working on. The little girls wanted to draw on everyone else's papers, but at least the crayons and markers were all at the table (except for all of those that fell off!)

A wonderful day!

Morning schedule: We got a rough start this morning. We were up late last night with Family Home Evening and we slept in. We were also tired from cleaning and parking yesterday. We started at about 9:20. Learning time is supposed to start at 9. Kalani and Natalie were done with their music time and all three of the oldest had done their morning chores. I did the morning dishes and started a load of laundry, but didn't rotate it. Raymond spent most of his time making paper airplanes. Ben spent his morning taking away whatever Rebecca had. We do need to shore up our morning routine.

Devotional: We didn't continue reading in the Book of Mormon today. We started with Genesis 1 to read about the creation. We read the whole first chapter of Genesis with some great discussion.
-"in the beginning" of what? time? the earth? The children all felt it was the beginning of time, but logic led them quickly to the beginning of the earth
-we discussed how the Lord spake and the elements obeyed
-we discussed the days and what was made when
-the sun, moon and stars used as signs-I asked when they have been used for signs and they answered, with Christ's birth. It occurs to me that I don't know many other times...something to research.
-we discussed the concept of dominion-the girls are reading a series called "Heartland" which talks about Horses. In it two different types of horse training methods are discussed. One involves listening and respecting the horse, the other involves forcing the horse to obey. We read Proverbs 12:10 "A righteous man regaurdeth the life of his beast". We talked about spiders...are we being stewards of our home when we let bugs run free in our home? How should we treat them outside and why? How about a horse, is it good dominion to let a horse roam through the garden? How about leadership and dominion over people?
**we need to discuss the purpose of man's creation more, Christ as creator, dominion and leadership...

Reading: A Journey to the Centre of the Earth
What a great book! Now that I have read it myself, and talked to my dad, I was more prepared for what to teach the children. In the section we were reading (I think we only read 5 pages in 90 minutes! The discussion was great, but the children wanted the plot to progress) the Professor and the nephew were discussing difficulties they would encounter with their travels. The nephew brought up a few points which we discussed:
-gravity in the center of the earth-we talked about what gravity is, what it is like on the moon, how it would be different in the center of the earth. We talked about zero gravity and how you could move in zero gravity. Raymond wants a fan for zero gravity...we talked about what is in air that you could push-including Carbon, Hydrogen, Oxygen, Nitrogen and as Raymond reminded us...lots of other minor ingredients. We talked about how gravity actually helps us and the concpet "there must needs be opposition in all things" from 2 Nephi 2:25. Opposition is helpful and painful! **movement in zero gravity
- pressure - we talked about the states of matter, gas, liquid, solid. We talked about how atoms move in each state and how temperature and pressure effect matter. Raymond brought up some atoms being heavier than others and wondering if they separate out, or condense or freeze sooner than others. **there is science experiment potential here...
-distance- they had only traveled 50 miles down into the center of the earth despite already walking 255 miles. (We rounded the radius of hte earth to be 4,000) We worked out the proportion and did the math to discover they would need to walk 20,400 miles. If they walked 4 miles an hour that would take them 5,100 hours. If they walked 10 hours a day, that would be 510 days, or just under a year and a half...one way! The circumference of the earth is 24,901.55 according to http://geography.about.com/library/faq/blqzcircumference.htm. They would be walking almost the circumference of the earth, just to get the 4,000 miles down to the core...this is all hypothetically assuming they could walk to the core (we then discussed hyothetical statements). **differences in the circumference of the earth, the fact that they would be walking five times the necessary distance to go down-why did they need to do that, what kind of triangle would that make? What would the angle of their descent be if they continued at that pace. How long would their trip take if they had a bike? A car? A train? A plane?

Frustrations-Today there was only one good coloring book in the house...a My little Pony coloring book owned by Lydia. She wasn't willing to share. I haven't separated out the markers form the coloring stuff and I got colored on. I needed to get some toys out before we started, so the little children are guided in their actions, instead of loudly proclaiming their dissappointment that the ONLY good coloring book in the house (today) could not be theirs. The children were frustrated that we talked so much and didn't read very much. Perhaps this is a good time to work on reading more in the evenings and conintuing the discussion during the day? Would they learn as much to have the discussion separated from the reading?

A Thomas Jefferson Education

Homeschool has officially started once again! I say this tongue in cheek, because we have been reading all summer, and only officially broke off learning for vacations. Yet it is September and all the world is returning to school...the pull towards education is strong.

I decided to keep a journal of our thoughts and experiences with our educaiton. Thomas Jefferson education is unique. http://www.amazon.com/Thomas-Jefferson-Education-Generation-Twenty-First/dp/0967124611 We may not be finishing workbooks or taking tests. It may not look like school. We will be learning none the less, or perhaps all the more, because of it. This journal is an attempt to keep track of some of the things we learn and discuss together. In that sense it is a record and a way of viewing our progress.

It is also a way of keeping myself accountable. It will hopefully help me analyze and think about how I am inspiring my children to learn...to be a more thoughtful mentor. It will help me see what is happening in our education over time to be a more organized mentor. It will also hopefully help me notice gaps in education and notice how our education could be enhanced.

Of course I decided to start a journal because this is a great day! I hope to record the great days, as well as the frightfully less than great days, so as to achieve an accurate sense of what is happening...
